Preliminary Census Counts Estimate Anguilla’s Residential Population at 11,300
While the processing of the census questionnaires is not yet completed to allow a firm count of Anguilla’s population, the pre-census day household visits have allowed a first estimate of the population to be released. The residential population, that is those people who are normally resident in Anguilla for at least 6 months of the year, termed the de jure population count, is 11,300. It is estimated provisionally that, 5,570 are males and 5,730 are females and that 8,130 were adults 15 years over and 3,170 were children. The de facto population, that is those who were staying in Anguilla on the night of Wednesday May 9th, 2001, is estimated to be 11,960 people which includes 644 people who were staying in hotels or boats on Census night, and 152 who were visiting from other countries and staying in private homes and excludes 172 who were temporarily absent but usually reside in Anguilla.
The last census was carried out during the week of February 24 – 28, 1992. The de jure population count from this census was 9,290 and the de facto population count was 9,660 which included 700 visitors staying at hotels and boats and excluded 330 who temporarily absent. The de jure population was estimated from the de facto population in 1992. The de jure population increased over the 9 year period, 1992 to 2001 by 22% or an average annual rate of about 2% per year. The de factor increase was 24% or an average of about 2.5% per year. The number of males and females in 1992 was roughly the same. The percentage of children in the population was 30% slightly larger than the preliminary estimate from the 2001 Census of 28%.
Population projections based upon births, deaths and migration figures, projected the population to be 12,870 in 1999. A slightly larger population than the preliminary count shows. While the final count is expected to be slightly higher than the preliminary count, it is not expected to be as high as the population projections. Population projections tend to over estimate the population, as it is difficult to count the number of people who emigrate from Anguilla each year.
The pre-census day household visits also allow preliminary household estimates to be released. The total number of households is provisionally estimated at 3,750. A household is defined as a group of people who usually sleep and share a daily meal together. The average size of a household in Anguilla is estimated at 3 people.
Buildings were also counted during the pre-census day exercise. Total number of buildings was counted as 5,636 of which 3,834 were occupied residential buildings. Some residential buildings housed more than one household. In addition there were some 800 vacant or closed residential buildings some of which were villas.
